Milan Kaňák
absolvoval hru na hoboj, kompozici a dirigování na brněnské konzervatoři a vzdělání si
rozšířil studiem stejných oborů na Janáčkově akademii múzických umění v Brně. Je laureátem
mnoha soutěží interpretačních i skladatelských, dlouholetým sólovým a komorním hráčem.
V letech 1973 – 1990 byl sólo hobojistou orchestru Janáčkovy opery v Brně, v letech
1990 – 1995 prvním hobojistou Pražského komorního orchestru bez dirigenta. Mezi lety 1995
a 2003 působil jako šéf opery Jihočeského divadla v Českých Budějovicích, od roku 2003 je
uměleckým šéfem Janáčkovy opery v Brně.
V šéfovské i dirigentské práci zaměřil pozornost na zvýšení podílu české tvorby v repertoáru
budějovické a brněnské opery s příklonem k tvorbě 20. století (Janáček, Martinů, Hurník,
Feld).
Kromě působení v Jihočeském divadle a v Janáčkově opeře v Brně hostoval v Národním
divadle Praha, spolupracoval mj. se Státní filharmonií Brno, Jihočeskou komorní filharmonií,
Pražským komorním orchestrem.
Za poměrně krátkou dobu své dirigentské práce provedl přes 70 titulů různých stylových
období.

Milan Kaňák
graduated as an oboist, composer and conductor from the Brno Conservatory and later from
the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno. He has been awarded many prizes as a
soloist and as a composer, and has had a long career as a soloist and chamber player. From
1973-90 he was the principal oboist with the Janáček Opera in Brno, and from 1990-95 with
the Prague Chamber Orchestra. Between 1995 and 2003 he was the director of the Opera of
the South Bohemian Theatre in České Budějovice. Since 2003 he has been the artistic director
of the Janáček Opera in Brno.
In his position of both director and conductor in the South Bohemian and the Brno opera
houses he has concentrated himself to increasing the proportion of Czech music, especially
that of the 20th century (Janáček, Martinů, Hurník, Feld), in their repertoires.
Besides the South Bohemian Theatre and the Janáček Opera he has conducted the National
Theatre in Prague, the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, the South Bohemian Chamber
Philharmonic Orchestra and the Prague Chamber Orchestra.
During his relatively short career he conducted more than 70 titles from different periods.
