Alcohol and Drug Services Confidentiality The Inpatient Withdrawal Unit places importance on a patient’s privacy. Any discussions between the patient and their doctor, nurse or other health service provider is confidential. There are some rare situations where personal information may be released, but this will be explained prior to admission. The Unit offers: • T he Inpatient Withdrawal Management Unit is smoke free in line with the Tasmanian Alcohol and Drug Service Smoke Free Policy. Smoking is not permitted in the treatment facility (including the outdoor courtyard) or even when patients take daily walks. • Medically supervised safe withdrawal • Health education and life skills • Identification and support for different stages of the recovery process • C ounselling and support to deal with underlying issues associated with alcohol and drug use • Stress management and relaxation therapies • Development of coping skills • Development of relapse prevention strategies • S upport when dealing with anxiety and/or depression • G iving up smoking at the same time as other substances increases the likelihood of successfully quitting alcohol and other drugs in the long term. • N icotine Replacement Thearapy (NRT) is available to help patients quit smoking and a small supply can be given on discharge to help patients remain smoke free. • Discharge planning • A ccess to psychology, social work and welfare services when needed Generally withdrawal involves a five to ten day admission and there are ten beds available (four shared rooms with two individual rooms). The Unit is staffed 24 hours per day, 7 days per week by specialist nurses and alcohol and drug workers. There is 24 hour medical cover with specialist doctors on-site Monday to Friday and available on call after hours. Referrals and admissions • R eferrals can be made personally or by a General Practitioner, Health Professional or any related service or individual. • A phone call to the Unit will provide more detail on the referral and admissions process. • Admissions are accepted Monday to Friday. Important information • P rior to admission all patients will be given a Client Agreement to read, discuss and sign. The agreement outlines some of the rules and operating procedures of the Unit. • T o help patients remain focussed on their treatment, patients will not be able to make or receive telephone calls during their stay. In addition, the unit has a “no visitor” policy and some personal items including mobile phones and other electrical devices are not allowed in the Unit and will be returned to patients upon discharge.
