CHARACTERISTICS OF CELL LINE:-
TYPES OF CELL LINE: NORMAL CELL
 TRANSFORMED CEL
 CONTINUOUS CELL
NORMAL CELL LINE:It is defined as the cell line which divides a limited number of times
before loosing their ability to proliferate.

CHARACTERISTICS OF NORMAL CELL
LINE: Susceptible to human viral infection
 These cell have the ability to reproduce correctly, stop reproducing
whenever necessary.
 Remain in specific location
 Become specialized for specific function
 Self destruct when necessary.
TRANSFORMED CELL: It is defined as the conversion of normal healthy cell into a
TUMOROUS or CANCEROUS cell.
 It can be caused by exposure to a mutagen or carcinogen.
 For e.g.:- Ethidium Bromide, Formaldehyde, DEPC ( Di ethyl pyro
carbonate), UV radiation
 Proto oncogenes are normal healthy functional genes, which have
the potential to get converted into oncogenes upon exposure to a
carcinogen.

CHARACTERISTICS OF TRANSFORMED
CELLS: IMMORTALIZATION:1. The tumour/cancer has indefinite life span either due to mutation or
deletion of senesce genes.
2. It may also occur due to mutation in proto oncogenes or over expression of
oncogenes.
 ABERRANT GROWTH CONTROL:1. The cells will lose the growth control i.e. they will grow beyond saturation
density and will form heaps of cells on a confluent monolayer.
2. The cells may be immortal but still have there growth control intact.
3. E.g.- 3T3 mouse cell lines
 METASTASIS:1. It is the property to invade normal healthy cell.
2. E.g.- Leukaemia, blood cancer
3. Due to this property the tumour is able to proliferate at much higher
rate
 HIGH PLATING EFFICIENCY:They grow at a very high rate hence make the plate confluent in low time.
 CELL SURFACE MODIFICATION:1. L-CAM’s are very less expressed that is cell to matrix/ substrate interaction is
inhibited.
2. N- CAM’s are over expressed i.e. cell to cell interaction increase and the heaps of
cells are formed.
 SHORTER POPULATION DOUBLING TIME:Due to very short doubling time the tumour will replicate at a rapid rate.
 GROWTH FACTOR:1. The tumour is very less dependent upon the serum and the growth
factor of the host, because tumour secretes its own growth factor
• TiGF
• TAGF
CONTINUOUS CELL LINE:When a normal cell line undergoes transformation and acquires the
ability to divide indefinitely then it is known as continuous cell line.

CHARACTERISTICS OF CONTINUOUS
CELL LINE: Fast growth
 Grow more in suspension condition
 Ability to grow up to higher cell density
 Different in phenotype from donor tissue
 Homogeneous cell population
 Smaller, more rounded, less adherent with a higher nucleus/
cytoplasm ratio.
