THERAPEUTIC CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION PROCEDURES AMARJIT SINGH MD PEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGIST CHILDREN'S HEART CLlNIC MINNEAPOLlS MN U.S.A. Echocardiography has now replaced cardiac catheterization as a diagnostic procedure in children born with congenital cardiac defects. Advances in technology have encouraged developments in balloon dilatation of obstructive cardiac lesions, creation of atrial defects, c10sure of defects and abnormal blood vessels and removal of intravascularforeign bodies. Percutaneous techniques have encouraged pacemaker implantations and radio frequency ablation of abnormal intracardiac electrical pathways to terminate malignant cardiac rhythms. Cardiac catheterization therefore is no longer just a diagnostic procedure but a therapeutic procedure aswell. INDICATIONS FOR ELECTROPHYSIOLOGIC PROCEDURES 1. a. b. 2. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 3.
