Calendar Types There were 2 different calendar systems in ancient Egypt: Calendar (using stars) •  Civil Calendar (origin of nowadays calendar) Lunar Calendar Egypt used Luni-­‐solar Calendar (lunar calendar) with intercala;on of extra month Each month started with a new moon, so the year was 11 days shorter than the modern one. However, Lunar calendar wasn’t precise. There was a 13th month (Troth), which was un;l heliacal rising of Sothic happened. Sothic Sothic is a Greek term of Sopdet (Egypt language), which is Sirius, the brightest star The period that Sothic was at the sky, Nile flooded. Therefore, Egyp;ans set the period as the New year. There were 3 parts in the year: Akhet (flooding), Peret (growth-­‐winter), and Shemu (harvest-­‐summer) In Egypt, Sothic was only shown once a year. Every months were having 3 weeks of 10 days. There are 12 months with 30 days each. Also, there’s extra 5 days at the end of the year, so total is 365 days. In the 4th century BCE, Egyp;ans switched Lunar calendar into civil calendar. As a result, in Egyp;an calendar, 1 year of every 14
every 1460 years is empty, which is same as 1 day per 4 years. Consequently, Egyp;ans inserted addi;onal day every 4 years. That’s why we have leap days. Broadcasting
Julius Caesar got a idea from Egyp;an civil calendar and used in Roma, which was called Julian calendar. As ;me go on, there was a huge error in ;me. The year was actually, 365. 2495 days, so 10 days were ge]ng faster. Therefore, Pope Gregory XIII made the new calendar, Gregorian Calendar.
