· Solving one-step inequalities is much like solving
one-step equations.
·To solve an inequality, you need to isolate the
variable using the properties of inequalities and
inverse operations.
· Remember, whatever you do to one side, you do to
the other.
To find the solution, isolate the variable x.
Remember, it is isolated when it appears by itself on
one side of the equation.

Now let's see what happens when we multiply or
divide by negative numbers.
·Sometimes you must multiply or divide to isolate
the variable.
·Multiplying or dividing both sides of an inequality
by a negative number gives a surprising result.
Let's see what happens when we multiply this inequality
by -1.
5 > -1
-1 • 5 ? -1 • -1
We know 5 is greater than -1
Multiply both sides by -1
-5 ? 1
Is -5 less than or greater than 1?
-5 < 1
You know -5 is less than 1, so you
should use <
What happened to the inequality symbol to keep the
inequality statement true?
Helpful Hint
The direction of the inequality changes only if the
number you are using to multiply or divide by is
negative.
