Wakeland High School Skills Review for Geometry and PreAP Geometry 1 Operations with Rational Numbers Smplifying & Evaluating Expressions Using the Distributive Property 2 Properties of Exponents 3 Solving Linear Equations Example – solve for y 4 Radical Expressions Examples – Simplify the Expression 5 Solving Formulas A formula is an equation that relates two or more real-world quantities. You can rewrite a formula so that any one of the variables is a function of the other variable(s). In each case, isolate a variable on one side of the equation. 6 Graphing Points and Lines A coordinate plane is formed by the intersection of the x-axis and the y-axis. The axes meet at a point called the origin and divide the plane into four quadrants. Each point in the coordinate plane is represented by an ordered pair (x, y). 7 8 Slope and Intercepts of a Line Solving Systems of Linear Equations A solution of a system of linear equations is an ordered pair (x, y) that satisifies both equations. The solution is the point where the two lines intersect. x + 2y = 5 x – y = -1 Solutions: x = 1 and y = 2 written as (1, 2) See answer key for example of solution 9 Solving Quadratic Equations A quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c (a ≠ 0) can have two solutions, one solution or no real solution. A quadratic function y = ax2 + bx + c represents the graph of a parabola. The x-intercepts of the graph are the real solutions of the equation. You can solve a quadratic equation using a variety of methods: using the box method, graphing and finding x-intercepts using a calculator or using the quadratic formula. 10 Pythagorean Theorem Solve the right triangles using the Pythagorean Theorem – Find the value of the variable.
