Olivia Richards Environmental Science 1/8/13 Glossary Terms Biodiversity: The number and variety of living organisms; includes genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecological diversity. Communities: Populations of various types of species living in one place interacting with each other. Ecosystem: A community of organisms interacting with one another and with the physical environment of matter and energy in which they live. Endangered Species: A species that faces threats that might lead to its extinction in a short time. Extinction: Disappearance of a life form from existence. Food Web: A complex network of many interconnected food chains and feeding relationships. Indicator Species: A species whose status provides information on the condition of other organisms in that ecosystem as well as the condition of the ecosystem as a whole. Individuals: A single organism capable of independent existence. K-Strategists: Species that produce few, often fairly large offspring, prolonged period of paternal care, energy for each individual is high, long life expectancy. Poachers: Person who hunts game illegally Population: A group of individuals of the same species living in the same place at the same time. Reserves: Areas where animals can live and thrive without human interference. R-Strategists: Species that reproduce early on in their life span, produce large numbers of eggs, usually small and short-lived offspring, early maturity, short life expectancy. Threatened Species: A species that is still abundant but because of declining numbers could soon become endangered. APES Vocabulary.
