PROBABILITY & STATISTICS (Math 3403) Fall 2013

REQUIRED TEXT: Enhanced WebAssign, an online homework system which comes with e-text
(Introduction to Probability & Statistics, 4th edition, by: Mendenhall, Beaver, and Beaver, published by
Brooks/Cole-Cengage), and contains tutorials. The course key is: uamont 4450 6858. The student should enroll
in WebAssign as soon as possible. A graphing calculator is recommended.
COURSE PREREQUISITES: Grades of C or better in Calculus Series (Math 2254 - Math 2274 ).
TECHNOLOGY: Maple, Quattro Pro, MS Excel or a graphing calculator such as TI - 83, TI 89, or any other
software.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course is designed to enable students to grasp important concepts in
probability and statistics and learn how to apply these concepts in solving problems in both abstract and applied
settings.
Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course
1. You should be able to describe data with graphs such as pie charts, bar charts, line charts, histograms, and
several other charts.
2. You should be able to describe data with numerical measures such as measure of center (Mean and Median),
measure of variability, quartiles, percentiles, standard deviation.
3. You should be familiar with the basic fundamental concepts of probability such as events, sample space, ,
random variables, distributions, independence, and many more.
4. You should be familiar with the connection between probability and statistics.
5. You should be familiar with sampling distributions, estimation, test of hypotheses, inference from samples,
analysis of variance, regression, and correlation, and many other topics.

GRADING: All homework will be done on WebAssign. It is the student’s responsibility to have access to a computer
with reliable internet connection that is compatible with WebAssign. In addition, there will be some traditional type of
assignments.
Grading: Grades are assigned on the following basis:
Test # 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ....................................................100 points each
Homework........................................................100 points
Final Exam........................................................100 points
The final grade is based on the following percentages of the total of 700 points:
A: 90% - 100%
B: 80% - 89%
C: 70% - 79%
D: 60% - 69%
F: 0% - 59 %
SPECIAL POLICIES:
1.
No extension of the due dates of the assignments will be granted.
2.
If no tests are missed, your score on the final exam will replace your lowest test grade if the score on
the final is higher. If one test is missed, then the grade on the final examination will be substituted for
the test grade. If 2 or more tests are missed, a grade of zero will be given for the second and any
subsequent missed tests. Note that the average homework grade will not be substituted. There are NO
makeup tests. No exemptions form the final
You are expected to attend all class meetings. While attendance is not a factor in determining grade, a
good record of attendance will give the instructor a positive impression of the student=s attitude and
disposition which may favorably affect the course grade. Students are expected to make serious effort to
complete the assignments and turn them in before on the due dates. It is the student=s responsibility to
seek help to understand the concepts and do problems correctly. Students are expected to see the
instructor for help in a timely manner. While this course is not particularly difficult for those who make
a commitment to working on the course it does require a commitment of time and energy. The pace of
the course is fairly rapid and it is necessary for you to attend class, read the book, review the lectures
notes, and seriously attack the homework problems. You should commit at least two hours of study time
for each hour of lecture.

If a student misses more than six consecutive class meetings without informing the instructor of a valid and
documentable reason, he/she will be considered to have stopped attending class. A last date of Attendance will be
entered for the student in the WeevilNet system, and unless the student withdraws from the course before the last
date to drop, his/her grade for the course will be F. This policy will remain in effect even if the student
subsequently returns to class.

The use of cell phones, music devices, etc. in class is prohibited, and all such devices are expected to be turned off
and put away before class begins. Any student violating this policy will be asked to leave the classroom. Student
are not allowed to use a cell phone, tablet, or computer as a calculator on an exam or quiz.

Student Conduct: Students at the University of Arkansas at Monticello are expected to conduct themselves appropriately,
keeping in mind that they are subject to the laws of the community and standards of society. The student must not conduct
him/herself in a manner that disrupts the academic community or breaches the freedom of other students to progress

Academic Dishonesty: For any instance of academic dishonesty that is discovered by the instructor, the student(s)
involved will receive a grade of “0” for that assignment. Also, the incident will be reported to the Office of Academic
Affairs for further possible actions. Academic dishonesty includes:
1. Cheating: Students shall not give, receive, offer, or solicit information on examinations, quizzes, etc. This
includes but is not limited to the following classes of dishonesty:
a. Copying from another student’s paper;
b. Use during the examination of prepared materials, notes, or texts other than those specifically permitted by
the instructor;
c. Collaboration with another student during the examination;
d. Buying, selling, stealing, soliciting, or transmitting an examination or any material purported to be the
unreleased contents of coming examinations or the use of any such material;
e. Substituting for another person during an examination or allowing such substitutions for oneself.
2. Collusion: Collusion is defined as obtaining from another party, without specific approval in advance by the
instructor, assistance in the production of work offered for credit to the extent that the work reflects the ideas of the
party consulted rather than those of the person whose name in on the work submitted.
3. Duplicity: Duplicity is defined as offering for credit identical or substantially unchanged work in two or more
courses, without specific advanced approval of the instructors involved.
4. Plagiarism: Plagiarism is defined as adopting and reproducing as one’s own, to appropriate to one’s use, and to
incorporate in one’s own work without acknowledgement the ideas or passages from the writings or works of
others.
For any instance of academic dishonesty that is discovered by the instructor, whether the dishonesty is found to be
cheating, collusion, duplicity, or plagiarism, the result for the student(s) involved will be a 0 for the assignment in
question. The incident will be reported to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for possible further actions.
