EIMIBELL DE LOS SANTOS THE PIPING PLOVER THE PIPING PLOVER ▸ Piping plovers are shorebirds, this means that they are likely to be found on the shores. ▸ They are found in North America. ▸ There are at least 7 different species of plovers, and all of them are endangered today. ▸ Plovers were often shot as a game to people. ▸ They are now loosing feeding and nesting areas due to the increase in human disturbance. Can you Spot the Plover? PIPING PLOVERS ▸ Due to the color and their size (Average of 6 inches), piping plovers are very hard to spot if someone is not looking for them. ▸ It is also very hard to spot their eggs and their can easily be destroyed by human activity is caution is not taken. ▸ Piping plovers nest and feed by the water, especially above tideline, and alkali flats. ▸ When migrating they travel in small groups, females take off first, then the males, and finally the young. ▸ Humans currently pose the greatest threat to the Piping Plovers. ▸ There are only 3,100 Atlantic piping plovers left and not all of them are able to breed. OTHER DANGERS “AS GROUND-NESTING BIRDS, PIPING PLOVERS ARE EASY TARGETS FOR RACCOONS, FOXES, SKUNKS, AND OTHER PREDATORS.” audubon.org CONSERVATION PROTECTING THE PLOVERS ▸ There was an act protecting endangered species act that has helped increase the number of piping plovers that currently exist. ▸ More laws and regulations have been set forth to protect the piping plovers nesting and feeding areas. ▸ Reservations are placed on beaches they are spotted on, to protect the plovers and the eggs, for that season. DECREASE IN POPULATIONS “DECLINES RESULTED FROM DIRECT AND UNINTENTIONAL HARASSMENT BY PEOPLE, DOGS, AND VEHICLES, DESTRUCTION OF BEACH HABITAT FOR DEVELOPMENT, AND CHANGES IN WATER LEVEL REGULATION.” The Cornell Lab of Ornithology BIODIVERSITY WHY SHOULD WE CARE? ▸ Biodiversity refers to the amount of different types of living organisms in a community or ecosystem. We have come to realize that no matter how big of small a creature is, it plays an important role in the systems that our world has today. ▸ The piping plovers, no matter how small they are, are part of a food chain. Changes to a species in a food chain affects the animals that it eats, and the animals that eat it. ▸ The more biodiversity the better. High amounts of biodiversity results in a natural equilibrium.
