Advanced Practical Orthodontics
Advanced Practical Orthodontics is an in-office 4 session
course designed to provide hands-on orthodontic training for the
general practitioner. This course is designed for doctors who have
treated at least 5 comprehensive orthodontic cases from start to
finish, or have completed a Practical Ortho in-office course. Each 2day session involves lecture, typodont exercises, and treating
patients. Participants will learn a mechanics system that will allow the
doctor to treat about 70% of all the orthodontic cases which present
in a typical dental office. The course will focus on orthodontic
mechanics and bracketing techniques. Understanding case selection
is a very important aspect of this course. Participants will
understand which cases a specialist should treat.
The course is limited to 10 participants. It is held in dental offices
so doctors can treat their own patients during the course.
Participants have the option of bringing in their own patients. We use
2 offices for the course so you can schedule your patients at the
location that is convenient for you and your patients. Participants are
encouraged to bring both new patients and patients who are already
in treatment. Participants are expected to bring gloves, pliers, and
wires to use on their own patients.
Dr. Jim Prittinen has been an orthodontic instructor for the
United States Dental Institute since 1993, and has been the director of
Practical Orthodontics since 1997. In addition to directing Practical
Orthodontics, Dr. Prittinen maintains a general dental practice in
Virginia, MN, where he treats about 50 orthodontic cases per year. Dr.
Prittinen has had numerous orthodontic articles and reviews
published in “General Dentistry”, which is the journal for the AGD, as
well as many other dental journals.
There are many orthodontic courses available for the general dentist,
but few provide the practitioner the opportunity to treat their own
patients in a supervised setting. Practical Orthodontics gives the
clinician this opportunity. The doctor can see and do orthodontics in
a typical office setting.
The course costs $3000. The initial payment of $1500 is due before
the first meeting. Additional payments of $750 are due before the 2nd
and 3rd meetings. If the fee is paid in full before June 1st, 2010, the
cost is $2600.
The 3rd session of Advanced Practical Orthodontics will be held on
Jan. 22nd through 24th, 2011.Participants can choose to attend one of
the two hands-on sessions. The Sat., Jan 22nd hands on session will
be held at the office of Dr. Milan Gandhi. Dr. Gandhi’s office address
is 12706 Liberty Ave., South Richmond Hill, NY 11419. The office
phone is 718-641-8818. The session starts at noon and ends at 6pm.
The Monday, Jan 24th hands on session will be held at the office of
Drs. Katte and Indu Anilesh. The office address is 44 Tuckahoe Rd.,
Yonkers, NY 10710. The office phone number is 914-964-0575. The
session starts at 9am and ends at 3pm. The lecture session (all
attend the lecture) will be held at Dr. Gandhi’s office from 9am to 4pm
on Sunday, Jan 23rd.
The 4th session will be held on Saturday, April 2nd through Monday,
April 4th, 2011. The hands on sessions (again, participants choose
which session they attend) will be held April 2nd from noon to 6pm at
Dr Gandhi’s office, and April 4th from 9am to 3pm at Dr Anilesh’s
office. The lecture (all attend) will be held on April 3rd from 9am to
4pm at Dr Anilesh’s office.
Participants receive 56 hours of continuing education credit for the
course. Practical Orthodontics is an approved course under the AGD
PACE program. The provider number is 217542.
The textbook we use in conjunction with the course is “Textbook of
Orthodontics” by Bishara. A copy of the text is included in the course
fee. Typodonts are also provided; this is included in the fee. You will
need to bring some orthodontic pliers. A list of pliers (as well as
where you can order them at a reasonable price) will be sent to you
after you register.
If you would like to contact dentists who have completed Practical
Orthodontics, contact Dr. Prittinen and he will provide a list. If you
have any other questions, call Dr. Prittinen at 218-749-8908.
