Information about Steve Reich
Steve was born on October 3, 1936, he is an American composer. At the age of
14 he started to study music in Earnest after hearing music from the Baroque
period. Steve also studied drums with Roland Kohloff to understand how to
play Jazz music.
He attended Cornell University, and he graduated with a B.A in philosophy. He
composed film soundtracks for Plastic Haircut and Oh Dem Watermelons.
Steve was influenced by fellow minimalist Terry Riley whose work In C
combines simple musical patterns, offset in time, to create a slowly shifting
piece. He was also he was influenced by world music which uses a lot of
repetition.
Electric Counterpoint was written in 1987 for Pat Metheny who is a jazz
guitarist. He also composed Clapping Music in 1972.
Reich's style of composition has influenced many other composers
and musical groups, including John Adams and other artists. In May
2011 he was given an honorary degree.
