Clodagh McHugh Clodagh McHugh, (RGN, H.Dip Oncology, RNP) works as an oncology nurse specialist with patients at every stage of their disease and with all types of cancer. Based at a leading teaching hospital in Dublin, she also lectures on oncology nursing and is involved in developing safety guidelines relating to oral chemotherapy. She is also involved in a oncology nurse teaching program in Malawi. Kate Murphy Kate Murphy qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1992 in UK. Her working career has been primarily focused in the area of HaematoOncology until she moved to the Republic of Ireland in 2009. Kate Murphy has been working in the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork for over 5 years now. She began as a staff nurse on the in-patient Oncology Ward for a year, and since then, she has been working as an Oncology Liaison Nurse. The role includes meeting patients at diagnosis, taking them through their treatment plan and co-ordinating their care, informing them about the side-effects of chemotherapy and being a point of contact into the hospital when they are at home and liaising with all members of the MDT. Within this role the patients Kate cares for either have a Genito-Urinary, Lung, Gynaecological, Breast, Hepatocellular, Cancer of Unknown Primary or Haematological malignancy. Kate has a BSc in Oncology Nursing. Pfizer Oncology National Nurse Meeting Meeting the challenges of treating Renal Cell Carcinoma 24 May 2014 Anne Hayes Anne Hayes is a Counsellor and Psychotherapist. She also has long experience as nurse tutor in oncology and palliative care practice and education in a variety of settings. She set up and established education in Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross. She currently works as a Counsellor in ARC Cancer Support Centre and in private practice, working with people who are living with life-challenging illnesses. She holds a MSc. in Clinical Supervision from TCD. In this her particular interest is in the provision of clinical supervision for healthcare professionals. Lisa Guinan Lisa Guinan has over 10 years experience working as an oncology nurse and completed her higher diploma in Oncology Nursing at Trinity college in 2005. She also completed a certificate in Palliative care nursing and holds a certificate in counselling and psychotherapy. Lisa Currently works as an oncology nurse specialist advisor for the Pfizer Oncology Home Nurse Service. She runs a nationwide home nurse support service for all oncology patients who are prescribed specific oral anti cancer therapies and also provides education and training to oncology healthcare professionals around Ireland, in the management of cancer patients prescribed specific Tryosine Kinase Inhibitor Anti Cancer Therapies. Previous to this role Lisa worked in the area of radiation oncology at St Lukes hospital Dublin, as an oncology clinical nurse specialist in the Bons Secours Hospital and as a cancer information nurse specialist at the Irish Cancer Society. She has a special interest in both renal cancer and oral targeted agents. She has presented nursing perspectives on renal cancer to medical colleagues, most recently at the Renal Horizons meeting last year. She is also a member of the European Renal Cell Cancer Nurse Advisory Board. Dr. Derek Power Dr. Derek Power graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1994 with an honours degree in pharmacy. He then graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2001 with an honours medical degree. After his general medical training and two years of specialist training in medical oncology he won a bursary from the Irish Society of Medical Oncology and embarked on a Solid Tumour fellowship in Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York 2007-2009. He then did a Cancer Genetics fellowship in Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre 2009-2010. He was appointed as a consultant medical oncologist in the Mercy and Cork University Hospitals in July 2010. Interested include melanoma, gastrointestinal and genitourinary cancers as well as familial cancer genetics. Dr. Power has published original papers in the use of novel compounds in upper gastrointestinal cancer as well as reviews and book chapters in GI cancers. He has given oral presentations at the ASCO and ESMO meetings and is a member of national and international cancer organisations. He is a principal investigator on several ICORG clinical trials. Dr. Ray McDermott Clodagh McHugh & Kate Murphy Anne Hayes 3.00pm – 3.15pm Refreshment Break 3.15pm Pfizer Oncology Home Nurse Service Lisa Guinan 3.45pm Closing Remarks Lisa Guinan Dr. Ray McDermott commenced his training in Medical Oncology at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin during which time he completed an MBA in Health Services Management. From there, he went to the Institut Curie, Paris where he earned a PhD in Tumour Immunology. He subsequently completed his clinical training at Fox Chase Cancer Canter, Philadelphia, where he furthered an interest in Genito-Urinary Oncology working with Gary Hudes and Naomi Haas. During this training period, he published over twenty peer reviewed articles and Book Chapters. He then took up a post as consultant medical oncologist at the Adelaide & Meath and National Children’s Hospital, Dublin. Under the leadership of Dr. McDermott, the Department of Medical Oncology experienced a period of rapid growth. Satellite Oncology clinics were established and a Cancer Clinical Trials programme funded by the Health Research Board was established. In 2006, Dr. McDermott was instrumental in establishing Ireland as a main member of the Eastern Co-Operative Group, the largest clinical trials group in the USA with over 70 active studies. Dr. McDermott is the Principal Investigator for Ireland in this initiative and is involved in twice yearly meetings with ECOG to develop this relationship. A translational research collaboration with the National Institute of Cellular Biotechnology, based at Dublin City University, has been established. Dr. McDermott is the Chair of the Irish Clinical Oncology Research Group which is responsible for over 1500 cancer clinical trial patient accruals per year. Under the auspices of the Irish National Cancer Control Programme and the establishment of “Centres of Excellence”, Dr. McDermott’s hospital commitment has recently been split between AMNCH and St. Vincent’s University Hospital, where he pursues his interest in genitourinary cancers.
