Central Office Fuse Panels - Placement and Use
This Engineering/Installation bulletin is to address fuse panels and their uses
within Central Office lineups of IOF equipment bays. All new equipment bays
should be equipped with a fuse panel(s) to provide power to equipment in that bay.
In situations where new equipment shelves will be placed in existing bays, which
do not have sufficient fusing or fuse panels (except DSX bays), these options shall
be used in the order of priority.
1) Add a new fuse panel to the bay powered from the BDFB or power plant.
2) Powering the shelf from an adjacent bay fuse panel taking into
consideration the following:
a. The fuse size.
b. The load required by this fuse panel.
c. The cable voltage drop and ampacity from the BDFB or power plant.
d. In addition, labeling the used fuse position at the fuse panel and
building a manual record in COEFM power attributes for the fuse
panel is mandatory.
3) Powering the shelf from a fuse panel in the same lineup taking into
consideration the following;
a. The fuse size.
b. The load required by the fuse panel.
c. The cable voltage drop and ampacity from the BDFB or power plant.
d. In addition, labeling the used fuse position at the fuse panel and
building a manual record in COEFM power attributes for the fuse
panel is mandatory.
e. The cable from this fuse panel must be sized for a 0.25v loop voltage
drop.

4) Powering the shelf from a fuse panel in an adjacent lineup taking into
consideration the following;
a. The fuse size.
b. The load required by the fuse panel.
c. The cable voltage drop and ampacity from the BDFB or power plant.
d. In addition, labeling the used fuse position at the fuse panel and

panel is mandatory.
e. The cable from this fuse panel must be sized for a 0.25v loop voltage
drop.
5) If only one shelf can be added into the existing bay, the shelf can be cabled
directly to the BDFB or power plant. This may be done when no other
option is available in order to save the cost of a fuse panel. Multiple
shelves in a bay require a fuse panel.
Note- This does not apply to equipment located more than one aisle away or on
another floor. In those cases, a fuse panel must be cabled from a BDFB on that
floor or a power plant.
In miscellaneous IOF bays with a dedicated fuse panel where equipment is added
and the ultimate equipment load is unknown, the engineer should select a fuse
panel to provide sufficient fuse type and capacity. Typically a combination style
fuse panel (KLM+GMT or TPA+GMT) with 60 amp fuses from a BDFB or power
plant will provide for an ultimate drain of 48 amps for equipment placed in this
bay.
All new BDFB or power plant fuse assignments are to be made by the CSPEC
Planner.
