A SHORT GUIDE FOR EMERGING DIRECTORS

palette,theflexibilitythespaceofferedtheactorsanddirector?

Attendexhibitions,gatherrandomimagesthatyousensehavesomethingtodowiththe
wayyouthinkyoumightliketomakethepiece.
Sharethesethoughtswithadesignerwhenyoumeetthemandallowthemspaceto
respondandtosharetheirownthoughtsandideas.

intoomuchdetailwhatyouthinkyouwantthemtoproduce.

GRADUATEdesignerscouldbebetween1and3yearsoutoftraining.
MosthavetrainedonAssociationofCoursesinTheatreDesign(ACTD)recognisedcourses.

establisheddesigners.Thismeansthatthestandardoftheirmodel-makinganddraftingskillsislikelyto
behigh.Theymayalsohavegainedexperienceofworkingwithintheatrebuildingsliaisingwith
wardrobeandconstructionteamsinawaythatisnotpossibleonsmallerscaleproductions.
Italsooftenmeansthattheyarekeentoutilisetheirskillsonprojectsthatofferthemtheopportunity
tomakeworkasdesignersintheirownright.

6. INVESTINTHEDESIGNERBEFOREYOUINVESTINTHEDESIGN
Designersareresourcefulcreatures.Byinvestingfinanciallyintheirtimeandknowledgeyouwillgeta
moresuccessfuldesign,evenifyourproductionbudgetismodest.
YoumaynotbeinapositiontobeanIndependentTheatreCouncil(ITC)approvedcompanyasyetbut

Alwaysseparateoutthefollowingareasofyourbudgetinyourdesignbrief.
