In 1933, Jews in Germany numbered around 525,000 or only 1
percent of total German population.
In the next 6 years from 1933, Nazis undertook an “Aryanization” of
Germany, dismissing non-Aryans from the civil service.
In November 1938, when German Synagogues were burned and
windows in jewish shops were smashed; some 100 jews were killed
and thousands more arrested.
Nuremberg Law
Nazi rallies
The first official concentration camp opened at Dachau (near Munich)
in March 1933 and many of the first prisoners sent there were
Communists.
From 1933-1939, hundreds of thousands of jews who were able to
leave Germany did, while those who remained lived in a constant
state of uncertainty and fear.
Due to the Nuremberg Laws of 1935, people that had up to 3-4
Jewish grandparents was considered a Jewish citizen. However, those
with just 2 grandparents of Jewish descent was considered a half
breed, and Because of these Laws, Jews were targeted for stigmation
and persecution.
Huge Nazi rallies and symbolic acts such as the public burning of
books by Jews, Communists, liberals and foreigners helped drive
home the desired message of party strength.
