Ticks that can carry Lyme and other diseases which are harmful to you as well as your dog are becoming more prevalent in Canada. **Because your dog could be at risk of infection, it’s important to know: Just one bite from a tick that’s carrying disease can infect your dog. Most tick-borne diseases show few symptoms; some don’t show any. Following a prevention plan can help keep your best friend free from tick-borne diseases. Talk to your vet right away if you find a tick on your dog or if you suspect infection. Since ticks only require a temperature of 4˚C to be active, and due to the milder temperatures we have been experiencing this winter, we are recommending starting your tick product of choice on March 1st this year. There are three main products to choose from: Advantix starts working before ticks attach, but owners should be aware that it is extremely dangerous to cats for the first 12 hours after application to their dog/s and so requires that any cats living with dogs be kept separated during this time. Application is required monthly. Bravecto is an oral chew which only needs to be given every 3 months. It kills more than 97% of ticks within 12 hours for the entire 12 week period, greatly reducing the risk of transmission of tick-borne diseases. Nexgard is also an oral chew and needs to be administered monthly. It is used for the treatment & control of the Black-legged (deer) tick, American Dog tick, Lone Star tick & Brown Dog tick. All three products kill both fleas and ticks. A HEARTWORM PRODUCT IS STILL REQUIRED throughout the appropriate months and following a negative heartworm test (which includes testing for 3 tick-borne diseases).
