• the fauna of Australia consists of a huge
variety of animals
• lots of animals are unique thanks to Australia’s
isolation from other continents and thanks to
specific geologic and climatic events (climate
changes)

• there are some examples of unique Australia’s
animals here: Kangaroo, Platypus, Emu,
Tasmanian Devil, Koala, Dingo
• Australia’s snakes are known to be very
poisonous – there are more poisonous snakes
than non-poisonous

• red kangaroo is the largest of all kangaroos
• is the largest mammal native to Australia
• the males can leap over 9 m in one leap
• kangaroos are famous for their pouch where
females carry their youngs called Joey
• male kangaroos fight with their legs
Platypus

• is a semiaquatic mammal endemic to eastern
Australia including Tasmania
• is the only mammal that lays eggs instead of
giving birth
• is one of the few poisonous mammals
• is an iconic symbol of Australia

• is the largest bird native to Australia
• is the second largest extant bird in the world by
height after the ostrich
• is flightless bird reaching up to 2 metres in height
• can sprint at 50 km/h
• they defend themselves with their strongly
clawed feet

• for many Australians is the Dingo a cultural icon
• they are often depicted on rock carvings and
cave paintings as a cultural symbol of
Aboriginal people
