Tachycardia

- If patient has arrhythmia (confirm by ECG) as well as increased heart rate, antiarrhythmics should usually be prescribed
- Tachycardia is usually not indicated in heart failure, but can increase mortality
- Causes of tachycardia are: hypotension, hypovolemia, increased body
temperature, infection, sepsis, epinephrine, amphetamine, endocrine gland tumor,
hyperthyroidism
- Treatment is dependent on the location of the disorder and patient’s general
condition: ventricular tachycardia is treated by anti-arrhythmic or electrical
cardioversion if necessary;
