Guidelines for School Appropriate Art
Nudes- As long as they are not pornographic, nudes are permitted in art historical
examples, sketchbooks and projects.
Drugs- Representation of drugs is only permitted if used in a n anti-drug message.
Images that are considered drug related include but are not restricted to:
 Pot leaves/ maple leaves
 Joints, bowls, bongs, hookahs
 Syringes
 Mushroom of any kind
 Gas masks
 Light bulbs
 Pacifiers
 “candy”
 Poy
 Tobacco
 Bottles that obviously contain or once contained alcohol
Weapons and Violence- Weapons are permitted in artwork as long as they are not
portrayed in a violent act. If there are weapons in an image, there must be no blood; if
there is blood, there must be no weapons. No weapons may point at a person. Artwork
that promotes or glorifies criminality is not school appropriate. No gang signs are
allowed, and all the hate “isms” (Nazi, KKK, etc.) are forbidden unless used in an antihate message. Religious iconography is OK as long as it is not used in the context of hate
“isms.”
Profanity and Defamation- Profanity is not permitted in school artwork. Defamation
and liable works are not considered appropriate, though satire and caricature are
permitted.
The above rules are intended as a general guideline. School officials reserve the right to
alter these guidelines and add to them, as well as to evaluate work on a case-by-case
basis.
