What’s wrong with fast food? Fast foods are high in fat, sugar, and salt. Children who eat fast food often eat larger portions, more fat, and more added sugar. They also usually drink more sugar-sweetened beverages, less liquid milk, and eat fewer fruits and vegetables. The extra calories from eating often at fast food restaurants over time has been shown to increase the risk for obesity and chronic health problems, like heart problems and type 2 diabetes. How can I balance healthful eating with the reality of my family’s schedule and budget? Eat fast foods less often. If you normally eat fast food every day, cut back to once a week or once a month; you’ll be cutting your calories because you’re not having the food as often. Eat smaller amounts. Avoid large and super size options. Try a lower-calorie version. Choose grilled instead of fried; a baked potato, salad/vegetables or fruit as a side instead of French fries. Choose a small hamburger instead of a cheeseburger. Many chains have nutrition information available in the restaurant and online. Use it to find items lower in calories, fat, and sodium. Drink water instead of sodas or milk shakes. Parents can encourage healthy eating habits for children by providing home cooked meals which include: Plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole grain products Low-fat or non-fat milk or dairy products Lean meats, poultry, fish, lentils, and beans for protein Reasonably sized portions Lots of water (less juice and less or no soda) Limited sugar and saturated fat
