Test Bank, Chapter 2
Short Answer
1. Explain when a list of events is preferable to a calendar of events based on the user’s
needs.
Answer: If the events are ones that are consulted frequently, a calendar is best, but if
users look for events are infrequently, a list is sufficient.
2. What are three main ways in which printed pages differ from Web pages in their display
of information?
Answer: Print is vertical in shape while Web is horizontal, resolution of images and
text on print is much finer, and print pages do not need navigation (other than page
numbers!) or identification content
3. Many newspapers began with Web sites that looked a lot like the printed versions.
Discuss three ways in which the display of stories and pictures changed as the Web
evolved:
Answer: Only headlines and perhaps a small piece of text were placed on the main
page, the rest of the story was on another page in larger type, and pictures were often
limited to small versions embedded in the text.
4. You have access to some good-quality video images for your Web site. Explain the two
main considerations you must make about how you display the video.
Answer: You need to decide if the user should have control over playing the video,
and if so, whether the video should be embedded in the page or open in a separate
window.
5. .List three problems or drawbacks that can result if sound or video is added to a Web
page

Answer: Download time is increased, the user may become distracted, and the user’s
technology (monitor, browser, sound or video card) may not be able to deliver the
intended quality.
6. Describe three components of site design that are influenced by an existing corporate
identity that has been seen on products, packaging and other communication.
Answer: The company probably has a logo that must be used on each page, a certain
color scheme that might derive from colors in the logo, and certain fonts or typefaces.
7. How can a table be used to help display content on a Web page other than in a calendartype format?
Answer: Use the table as an invisible grid by turning the borders off.
8. Compare a user’s ease of navigation with a print document versus a Web site.
Answer: Users (readers) are familiar with a book or periodical’s structure, table of
contents, index, and numbering system. With Web sites, the navigation system varies
from one site to another, and it is often unfamiliar (and in fact often hidden) to many
users.
9. Describe two ways a company logo can aid in navigation.
Answer: It tells users where they are, and so helps them from feeling lost. It also often
serves as a direct link back to the home page.
10. Compare the navigational advantages of using menus versus a key word search.
Answer: Menus show more of the site to the user and are quicker to use, but can take
more space. Searches are more compact, but less intuitive.
11. .Explain what a designer would mean when she says that all the site’s navigation should
be “above the fold.”

Answer: The navigation elements should be visible without the user having to scroll
down the page.
12. Explain how forms are essentially on-way communication, while forums and chats are
two-way.
Answer: Forms merely send a message to the site, while forums and chats allow users
to communicate with each other (and also with the site).
13. Explain how cascading titles help users know where they are and where they have been
on a site?
Answer: They show the pages that were clicked on (where they’ve been) to get to the
current page so that users know where the current page is located in the site hierarchy.
14. How does the design of the Ford Motor Company site make use of the company logo?
Answer: As well as placing it on most or all pages, it uses the logo’s oval shape as a
design device.
15. Explain how a site map might use two-stage interactive display to show users a complex
Web site’s content.
Answer: Large sites could have a site map that shows the structure down to the level
of main categories of content, and then clicking on those categories could show the
full details of that category.
