Patients Arriving by Ambulance at
Durham Regional Cancer Centre:
Instructions for Referring Hospitals
In order to facilitate the safe transfer of patients to the Durham Regional Cancer Centre at Lakeridge Health
and to ensure patients receive their prescribed treatment with minimal delay, please adhere to the
recommendations outlined below:
1. For patients with any of the following, a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN)
must escort the patient and be prepared to stay and accompany them back to your hospital:
 Oxygen
 An Intravenous infusion
 Any active intervention requiring nursing intervention, such as peritoneal dialysis
 Require medication administration during their visit - please ensure that the Nurse brings the appropriate
medications with the patient
2. For patients with any of the following care requirements, an appropriate escort such as a personal
support worker, appropriate family member, or translator is required:
 non-ambulatory and or non-communicative
 Require assistance with activities of daily living (i.e. toileting)
 not English speaking
Relatives may accompany the patient to the Cancer Centre, but they will need to make their own
transportation arrangements.
3. Pertinent information and supplies that need to accompany the patient:
 Patient's current chart and list of the medications they are taking
 Diagnostic films, such as X-ray, MRI, CT etc.
 Bagged lunch or meal for the patient if patient is expected to miss a regular meal because of the
appointment
You will be informed of any other information required upon notification of the appointment.
General Information for patients and your staff:
The Durham Regional Cancer Centre does not have a cafeteria. Beverages and food may be purchased in
the main building of the Hospital.
As they wish, patients may bring something with them to help occupy their time. However, Durham
Regional Cancer Centre cannot accept responsibility for any personal belongings brought by patients
or their family members.
To assist patients with planning their visit, listed below are approximate times for different appointment
types:

*Above times are approximate and do not include Ambulance Transfer time
Please note that any patients on an Intravenous Infusion with an electronic infusion pump and
requiring Radiation Therapy will need to have their line flushed and capped prior to treatment to avoid
corruption of the pump software due to exposure to radiation in the Linear Accelerator.
