WHAT ABOUT MELATONIN??
Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that has been used to treat anxiety
and stress in a many animal species. Anecdotal stories abound regarding its
benefits and there has been a published case report regarding potential benefits
for canine noise phobia.
Like most supplements or “natural” remedies, there is not strong scientific
evidence of efficacy. But Melatonin might be worth trying or adding to other
therapies. It does appear to help reduce anxiety in some dogs.
The beneficial effects of Melatonin appear to have a rapid onset. Ideally if used,
it should be started 24 hours before need, but may even have benefit at the last
minute.
Melatonin is available over the counter in drug and health food stores. Sustained
release formulations should not be used. The dose is approximately 1 mg per
15-20 lbs and it can be given 2-3 times daily.
Since Melatonin is not an FDA regulated drug there is little to no quality control in
the various products marketed. The quality and bioavailability of this supplement
may vary widely brand to brand. The cheapest product may not be as effective
as a moderate or higher priced product. One brand that has been used with
some success by Veterinary Dermatology Specialists for skin problems is
Nature’s Bounty. It may be a reasonable brand to start with, but caution is still
advised purchasing the best quality product.
