Excessive Noise and Hearing Loss The Dangers of Over Protection It may be tempting to pick the hearing protection with the highest level of protection (or attenuation), however ‘over attenuation’ can bring its own problems. If the sound level at the ear is reduced too far, the wearer can become isolated, unable to hear colleagues‘ voices, moving vehicles, warning sounds, or alarms Hearing loss caused by exposure to noise at work continues to be a significant occupational illness. Whilst a reduction of 5dB(A) may not at first glance appear significant, it is worth noting that a reduction of just 3dB(A) is roughly equated to halving the sound energy level. The Optime™ Alert System by 3M makes for a quick and easy Hearing Protection Equipment selection process Choosing the correct hearing protection for your needs can be difficult; the hearing protectors should neither over nor under protect the user. With this in mind 3M has an easy to use Optime™ Alert system for 3M™, E-A-R™ and Peltor™ Branded Hearing Products that aids correct selection of hearing protection appropriate to noise level. Alternatively the 3M™ Optime™ Sound Check Meter will indicate the average noise in your work place area when left there to stabilise. 3.
