K I N G & M C C U N E O R T H O D O N T I C S Smiling Faces Newsletter Orthodontic Emergencies Discomfort It’s normal for a patient to have discomfort for a day or two after braces, appliances, or retainers are adjusted. Please, reassure your child that the discomfort is both normal and temporary. Sometimes this discomfort can make eating uncomfortable. Providing soft foods will help your child eat. To ease discomfort, rinse with warm salt water and take some acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Mouth Sores Some patients are more susceptible to mouth sores. While sores are not caused by braces, they may be precipitated or exacerbated by an irritation from braces. One or several ulcers may appear on the cheeks, lips or tongue. This is not an emergency but may be very uncomfortable for the patient. Prompt relief may be achieved by applying a small amount of topical anesthetic (such as Orabase or Ora-Gel) directly to the ulcerated surface using a cotton swab. Covering the braces near the mouth sore with wax will also provide temporary relief. Rinsing with warm salt water will help the mouth sores heal faster. Poking Wire Occasionally the end of a wire will work itself out of place and irritate the patient’s mouth. Use a cotton swab or pencil eraser to push the wire so that it is flat against the tooth. If the wire cannot be moved into a comfortable position, cover it with wax or cut it with nail clippers or scissors that have been cleaned with alcohol. If you cannot resolve the wire irritation, call our office for an appointment. Broken Brackets or Bands If the braces have come loose in any way, the parents need to be notified, so they can call the orthodontist to schedule an appointment. Even if you already have an appointment scheduled, please call so we can have enough time reserved to take care of you. Brackets are the parts of braces attached to teeth with a special adhesive. They are generally positioned in the center of each tooth. The bracket can be knocked off if the patient is eating sticky, chewy, gooey, hard, or crunchy foods or if they pick at their braces. If the bracket is off center, then the bracket may be off. Bands These eating foods. off. are the silver rings around the back teeth. generally come loose when the patient is sticky, chewy, gooey, hard, or crunchy If the band ever wiggles, then the band is KING & MCCUNE ORTHODONTICS WINTER 2016 Emily’s off to Dental School!
