ME 534 Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Chp p 1 – Introduction to Intelligent g Manufacturing g Systems y ((IMS)) Mechanical Engineering University of Gaziantep Dr. A. Tolga Bozdana Assistant Professor What is Intelligent Manufacturing System (IMS)? Definition IMS is a system which improves productivity by systematizing the intellectual aspect involved in manufacturing and flexibility by integrating the entire range of corporate activities so as to foster the optimum in relationship between men and intelligent machines (H. (H Yoshikawa, Yoshikawa University of Tokyo). Tokyo) Purpose The goal is to satisfy the customer needs at the most efficient level for the lowest possible cost (Nam Suh, MIT). An intelligent manufacturing process has the ability to self-regulate and/or self-control to manufacture the product within its design specifications (Nam Suh, MIT). 1 How to Achieve Intelligence in Manufacturing? What is “Intelligent Manufacturing”? Whatever it is, it is “Manufacturing”. Answer is “intelligence”. So, where does the intelligence come from? What is the difference with “Traditional Manufacturing”? It is a process of “making a choice”. So, how to make a choice? Based on some “comparison”. Then what to be compared? Then, Apply different function due to different event based on organon (an instrument for acquiring knowledge) or experience. “Forecasted “F t d statement” t t t” based b d on th the choice. How to forecast? Organon is based on some “rule”. rule . Experience is based on some “knowledge”. Knowledge is some kinds of rule. rule Rule is some kinds of knowledge. 2 Intelligent Manufacturing System (IMS) Adopted and reproduced from Rao et al., “Integrated distributed intelligence in manufacturing”, 1993 and Kumara S.R.T., “Intelligent Manufacturing Systems: Mapping of Al Tools to M Manufacturing”, f t i ” 2ndd Meeting M ti on Applications of AI, 1995.
