Emerald Award
For Your Newsletter
Sponsored by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners
And The Pollution Prevention, Remediation and Air Quality Division
County Commission honors “clean and green” businesses
Does your business excel in recycling, reducing hazardous wastes, conserving natural
resources, reducing Climate Change emissions or other environmentally friendly practices? If so, you
should apply for Broward County’s Emerald Award. The application is simple and free!
The Emerald Award was created by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners and
the Pollution Prevention, Remediation and Air Quality Division to honor businesses for exceptional
commitment to protecting the environment and to persuade consumers to patronize environmentally
responsible companies.
Since the Emerald Award began in 2001, scores of local businesses have been honored for
their environmental actions. Every company that qualifies receives an Emerald Award Certificate. The
Broward County Board of County Commissioners recognizes the Business of the Year annually.
The six categories for which businesses can qualify are:

Pollution Prevention/Hazardous Waste Reduction, such as using less-toxic cleaners

Recycling, such as recycling paper, cardboard, scrap metals or used oil

Green Products and Practices/Innovation, such as using green cleaning products, sustainable
materials, or by conserving water or energy

Climate Change Leader, by implementing lighting upgrades, fuel economy programs, or
building upgrades

NatureScape Broward, by planting drought tolerant native landscaping, and providing food,
water and shelter for wildlife
Winners will be listed on the County Web site, www.broward.org/PollutionPrevention, and will
be recognized in all publicity efforts. All businesses that qualify for certificates can use the Emerald
Award logo in their marketing campaigns. For more information on qualifying for an Emerald Award,
call Kay Sommers at 954-519-1257 or visit the Emerald Award Web site at
