Orthodontists are performing a full mouth reconstruction in enamel (Dr. Ron Roth). Keeping this in mind, it seems reasonable to try to implement principles that apply in reconstructive and prosthetic dentistry also in orthodontic patients. What are the signs and symptoms of unstable occlusions? What is the range of normal? Is it justified to strive for an ideal occlusion in our patients? What are the long-term sequelae in compromise orthodontic treatments? Do children and adolescent patients adapt to less than ideal treatment results, or should we expect long-term consequences in the orognathic system in these patients? I will use patient examples to answer theses questions. I will review the literature to support my point of view, that orthodontists should try to achieve a stable condylar position in their patients.
