Nicholas Chase — Biography In his ongoing quest for unusual musical possibilities, Nicholas Chase has played mannequin limbs, walkie-talkies, record-players, transistor radios, sitting inside a piano, riding a bicycle—and has performed more traditionally as a vocalist, a 'cellist, and as a solo pianist on the instrument keys. Chase's musical escapades have been commissioned by a list of notables including Long Beach Opera, New Zealand's 175 East, the Philadelphia Classical Symphony, California E.A.R Unit, and illustrious soloists internationally. He has been a featured artist and resident composer at Stanford's Center for Computer Research and Acoustics, and at the Janáček Academy of Music, Brno Czech Republic, and headlined festivals in Europe and the US composing, performing and improvising large-scale works that integrate kinetic visuals with bold musical statements. His site-specific, interactive composition/installation NOVA: Transmission for FM radio and close-circuit TV was exhibited at the 2008 Whitney Biennial in New York. Honors include an inaugural Composer Fellowship at the 2011 Other Minds Festival in San Francisco, a nomination among only 20 US composers for the prestigious American Academy Berlin Prize in 2014, and an honor for excellence in music composition for his koto and cello duo "Gayate." Chase has been featured on KPFA-FM Other Minds Radio, NPR's Kalvos and Damian's New Music Bazaar and Boombox Classroom, KXLU Trilogy Radio Los Angeles, Resonance FM London, KMHT Television, New York, and Salve Television, Germany. Graphically compelling, Chase's scores have been auctioned as visual art and featured in US art journals. 2016 brings the CD release of "Bhajan" for violin and computer on Cold Blue Music (LA) as well as premieres of new chamber works in Boston, New York and Los Angeles.
