MARISS JANSONS AND BAVARIAN RADIO SYMPHONY
ORCHESTRA RETURN TO ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL WITH
ALL-WAGNER PROGRAMME
Saturday 8 March, 2008, Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre 7.30pm
In what will be a highlight event of the London orchestral season, one of the finest
conductor/orchestra partnerships today returns to the Royal Festival Hall on 8 March with a
programme of orchestral music from Wagner’s operas. Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian
Radio Symphony Orchestra perform music showcasing the incredible breadth of Wagner’s
output: from the majesty of the Tannhauser overture to the fervent battle-cry of the Ride of
the Valkyries. Works include Siegfried’s jubilant journey down the Rhine from
Gotterdammerung, followed by his tragic, poised funeral march; the preludes to Acts I and III
of Lohengrin and Mihoko Fujimura will join the Orchestra to perform Wagner’s
Wesendonck Lieder.
Jansons and the BRSO return after a critically acclaimed performance of Mahler’s 5th
Symphony in the Royal Festival Hall on 11 November. These two concerts mark the
beginning of a four-year relationship with Southbank Centre.
Mihoko Fujimura has considerable Wagnerian pedigree, having sung Kundry (Parsifal) and
Fricka (Der Ring des Nibelungen), as well as recording the role of Brangäne (Tristan und
Isolde) with Placido Domingo, Nina Stemme and Antonio Pappano. She was warmly
received in the role of Waltraute in this year’s Ring cycle at the Royal Opera House, Covent
Garden. Future engagements include new productions of the Ring in Bayreuth, Vienna and
Paris.
