Kingdoms
 The largest classification group is a Kingdom
 There are 6 Kingdoms of living things:
 1) Ancient Bacteria
 2) True Bacteria
 3) Protists
 4) Fungi:
 Example: mushrooms (get its food from dead organisms)
 5) Plants:
 Example: dandelion (makes their own food)
 6) Animals
 * Humans are in the “Animal” Kingdom
Getting More Specific
(Genus)
 Scientists use the smallest two groups to name organisms
 The first part of an organisms name is the genus
 Genus: is a group of closely related living things
 Example: A Black- footed cat and a house cat are in the
same genius “felis” .
 This is because they both have sharp claws and hunting
behaviors

Ocelot
House Cat
Getting More Specific
(Species)
 Species: is a group of similar organisms that can mate
and produce offspring
 The species name often describes a characteristic, such
as where the organism lives or its color
 Example: The species of a house cat is: “domesticus”
(domestic: lives with people)
 * Scientific Name for a House Cat: “Felis Domesticus”
