Pre-Procedure Patient Information
PREPARING FOR YOUR PROCEDURE:

Do not eat food or drink after midnight the night before your procedure.
You may take your regularly scheduled medications with a sip of water.
Bring a list of your medications with you, including inhalers if you use them.
If you are diabetic and take oral diabetic medicine and/or insulin, you will need to
check with your pr escr ibing doctor for instructions on what to take pr ior to
your pr ocedur e. If you have any further questions regarding this you can call
Interventional Radiology at 601-984-2833.
If you take Coumadin, Plavix, Hepar in, Fr agmin or Lovenox, you will need
to contact your Pr imar y Car e Physician for per mission to discontinue any of
these medications pr ior to your pr ocedur e. If you ar e a dialysis patient
contact your nephr ologists.
Then follow these instructions:

Coumadin or Plavix..........Stop taking 5 days before the procedure.
Aspirin…….Stop taking 7 days before the procedure.
Heparin, Fragmin, or Lovenox............Stop taking 24 hours prior to
procedure date.
Contact your primary care physician after the procedure about restarting your
medications, and when or if you need any blood work.
We will make every attempt to start your procedure on time; however, due to
emergencies and unpredictable changes in other procedures, we are sometimes
delayed. We appreciate your patience and thank you ahead of time.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU ARRIVE:

The Interventional Radiologist will explain the procedure in detail and answer
any questions you may have regarding the procedure before getting your consent
You may have an Intravenous (IV) placed for the administration of medicines to
help you relax.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR PROCEDURE:

The recovery time for your procedure may vary. You may recover upstairs in a
hospital room. This will be assigned after your procedure.
If you are having a port, dialysis catheter, PICC line or Apheresis catheter placed,
or biopsy performed, your recovery time will be 1-4 hours in our recovery area.
Typically, you will be able to eat 2-3 hours after the procedure when the sedation
has worn off. Advance diet as tolerated.
You will be receiving conscious sedation and MUST have an escort to drive you
home or have arrangements for someone to pick you up. We WILL NOT
discharge you without an escort/driver present.
Due to limited amount of space in the waiting room; we ask that you only have
one family member accompany you.
