Blackboard will be utilized during this course. Notes, assignments, announcements, and other
information may be posted on this site. All grades will be posted in blackboard. Go to
http://bb.tulsacc.edu and follow the directions to login. All TCC students have access to computers
and internet at any of the four campuses in the General User Computer Labs. Rules for using the
general computer lab are described in the TCC Student Code of Conduct Policy Handbook.

Catalog Description:
Included will be a survey of the protozoa and fungi of medical significance, with an in-depth
survey of bacteria, their morphology, metabolism, pathogenic capabilities, and classification.
Laboratory will emphasize those techniques concerned with isolation and pure culture of
microorganisms and the use of biochemical criteria in taxonomy. Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 3
hours. Prerequisite: CHE 1114 or CHE 1315 and completion of BIO 1224 with a grade of “C” or
better or instructor approval.
Course Objective:
1. To provide the student with a thorough knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of
microorganisms, with emphasis on the bacteria.
2. To indicate bacterial diversity in a survey of the major orders of bacteria and the use of
morphological and physiological differences in establishing taxonomic schemes.
3. To survey physical and chemical techniques for microbial control, including sterilization,
disinfection, and chemotherapy.
4. To introduce the concept of pathogenesis in microorganisms, and the resultant immune
response common to the infected host.
5. To provide a laboratory experience which will make the student proficient in the culturing,
and in the differential of microorganisms (bacteria) by staining, selective, and differential
media, biochemical criteria, etc.
How to Succeed:
The study of microbiology requires certain academic and analytical skills such as:
1. Three dimension visualization
2. The ability to integrate structural and functional concepts
3. Memorization
The instructor will assume that the student has self-discipline, self-direction,
motivation, and an appropriate academic background and prerequisites.
This course will require you to memorize and learn quickly, keeping up with the reading in
the textbook, and complete assignments on time. There will work that will need to be done outside
the classroom and laboratory. Remember, you start the class with an A, only you have the ability to
maintain that A.
Teaching Methods:
The course is divided into 2 – 3 hour lecture and 2 – 3 hour lab per week. The primary
method of instruction will be lecture, following the general outline of the textbook. Lecture and lab
may have handouts, overheads, films, etc. Students are responsible for reading the text prior to class.
Labs will cover lecture materials but not always in the same order. A course outline will be posted
on Blackboard at a later date.
Inclement Weather:
TCC rarely closes. If extreme weather conditions or emergency situations arise, TCC always
gives cancellation notices to radio and television stations. This information is also posted on the TCC
website (www.tulsacc.edu).
Cellular Phones and Pagers:
Please turn all phones and pagers to silent, vibrating, or off during lecture and laboratory.
Answering a phone call during class, unless in extreme emergencies with prior instructor permission,
are absolutely against class policy.
Attendance Policy:
Role will be taken during each lecture and lab. Any missed lecture or lab will not be able to
be made up. Students may ask classmates for any notes that might have been taken during the missed
time. Missed laboratory exercises cannot be made up. Missed laboratory quizzes/tests cannot be
made up and a score of 0 will be given.
It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw from class. Students who stop attending and do
not withdraw will receive an “F” failing grade. The last day to withdraw is Friday, July 11, 2008.
Excessive absences may be reported to the registrar’s office.
No food or drinks are allowed in the lab. No children are allowed in lecture or in the lab.
Grading Policies:
Evaluation techniques are as follows:
Lecture exams: There will be approximately 5 lecture exams worth 100 points each.
There will not be a comprehensive final. The last lecture exam will be given during
finals week.
Lab exams: There will be approximately 3 lab exams worth 50-60 points each. These
exams will include materials from dissections that the students performed in lab.
Lab unknowns: There will be approximately 1 group of unknown bacteria to identify,
worth 50 points each.
Lab quizzes and other assignments: Lab quizzes and/or assignment will be given on a
regular basis to be turned in and graded.
Current Events: A current event regarding Microbiology will be required along with a
1-2 page summary of the report with references from the text book. Worth 50 points.
All scores will be posted on Blackboard. Extra credit may be given at the instructor’s
discretion. Tests and quizzes will not be returned to students. Your semester grade will be based on
your total points earned at the end of the semester.
The following are the grade percentages:
90% - 100% A
80% - 89% B
70% - 79% C
60% - 69% D
< 60% F
Make-up Policy:
Tests may be made up at the testing center within 1 week of class. The test will be dropped
off at the testing center. If the test has not been taken during that time, a score of “0” will be
recorded for that student. The first time you have to make up an exam there will be no penalty. The
second time, an automatic 10% will be taken off your score. There are no make-up exams or quizzes
given in lab. Please do not miss any exams.
ADA Policy:
Students with special needs: Students with documented disabilities are provided academic
accommodations through the Disabled Student Resource Center (595-7115) or Resource Center of
the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (595-7428). If any student is in need of academic accommodations
from either office, it is the student’s responsibility to advise the instructor so an appropriate referral
can be made no later than the first week of class. Students may also contact the disabled Student
Services Office directly. Academic accommodations will not be provided unless appropriate
documentation is provided to the Disabled Student Services Offices to support the need.
Cheating and Plagiarism Policies:
Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one’s own work or
about the work of another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at
campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy
delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions
delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly
students from classes. Anyone suspected of cheating runs the risk of failing the course. Anyone
caught cheating will be automatically fail the assignment. Faculty may request that disciplinary
action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such request to the Dean of
Student Services. Plagiarism is claiming, indicating, or implying that the ideas, sentences, or words
of another writer are your own; it includes having another writer do work claimed to be you own,
copying the work of another and presenting it as your own, or following the work of another as a
guide to ideas and expression that are then presented as your own. The student should review the
relevant sections of the TCC Student Code of Conduct Policy Handbook.
Inappropriate Behavior in the Classroom/Laboratory:
Inconsiderate behavior toward the instructor or fellow student in lecture or lab will not be
tolerated. Initially the instructor will speak to you individually. If a change in behavior is not
observed, you will be dropped from the class. Such behavior includes disruptive late arrivals, talking
without turn in lecture, phone interruptions, and rudeness toward the instructor.
