TU100 learning outcomes activity template You can fill in a copy of this template for each part of TU100. Refer to the beginning of each part for the learning outcomes associated with it. The skills you should develop over the course of your studies are listed at http://www2.open.ac.uk/students/careers/about-you/pdp-skill-development. Block: 1 Part: 3 Learning outcome How far achieved? Examples of TU100 activities? How to progress? Describe the client-server model of the Web. Section 1 has introduced the basic concept of client-server model. I do not feel confident with the details of the model and I believe this will be explained in more detail in the material. Describe the components of a URL. I have learn the 3 parts that make up a URL. The parts that make up a URL will be explained in detail later in the material. Describe the concept of markup and its role in styling documents. Most of the activities in this section has aided in my understanding of markup and how it is used within documents. Continue to work through this part and gain further experience using HTML. Describe HTML and explain how a browser processes HTML tags. Although I understand that the browser processes HTML I do not have a technical understand of this parsing. I will continue to work through the material. Skills Knowledge and understanding ICT Skills. Describe what is meant by hypertext and explain how hyperlinks work, both within and between documents. Hypertext is the concepts of moving from one part of the web to another whether or not that is on the same page to get to the information you seek. I feel confident in creating hyperlinks and will continue to do so working through the material. Understand how images are dealt with and rendered in HTML. I understand that when the browser processes an image tag it sends another request of to the server to download the image. Keep working through the material and using attributes to control the tags further. Explain the role of stylesheets in specifying the appearance of HTML pages. Stylesheets are used to separate the contend from the page design to simplify maintenance. The sections so far only briefly covered CSS and did not provide any activities to produce a styled document, I believe this will be in a later section. Distinguish between different kinds of HTML editor. The activities in this section has allowed me to use both a WYSIWYG editor and directly type markup into a document. I believe the rest of this section will continue to build on the foundations of HTML and CSS. Use the HTML tags described in this part to create a very simple web page. Activities 9, 10, 17, 21 and 22 as provided me instructions on directly typing HTML tags into the document. Other sections of part 3 will continue to build on this foundation. I assume that the material will cover XML in more detail as only the concept was described. Explain the role and structure of RSS feeds. RSS feeds provide a way easy way to receive updated content from your favourite websites. I am feeling confident in RSS feeds and XML markup in general. Explain the role of a news reader. A news reader is a system which N/A allows you to pull all your RSS feeds into one place, saving you time. Key skills Develop skills in taking notes. I have been using FreeMind to take notes to complete TMA01. I will continue to take notes through the course of TU100. Evaluate the quality of information found on the web. I have learnt how to evaluate the quality of information on the web by using the PROMPT criteria. I am sure PROMPT will come in useful when finding references for TMA's. Keep a learning journal. I have kept a learning learning in the form of a blog on the OU website. I'll continue to create a blog during my studies as it helps me reflect. Practical and professional skills Use a news reader. I have used a application on my phone called feedly and google reader. N/A Use an HTML editor to create a very simple web page. I have used Google Sites simple HTML editor to get a basic understanding of how HTML is generated. Activities 2, 18, 19 and 20 have been useful in getting to understand the editor. I will continue to play around and develop my website further.
