TROUBLESHOOTING
GENERAL
TROUBLESHOOTING
The BWT-10240 will display a fault condition
with a code and title. Auto Recovery means that
when the fault condition goes away, the unit will
automatically restart, if conditions are right.
Manual Recovery means user intervention is
needed to restart unit, such as hitting RESET
switch AFTER problem is fixed.
In general, the operator should respond to a BWT10240 fault as follows:
Fault Code Display
The BWT-10240 can report any one of the faults
listed in the table above. Listed in the table is the
fault and number for each fault, and the recovery
mode.
1. The source of the fault should be sought by
referring to the specific information on the
following chart.
2. If the problem cannot be rectified, contact
Xantrex Technology Inc. for assistance or
service.

Manual Stop
The reset button has been pressed. Clear fault by
pressing rest button again. The unit will now
begin the initialization sequence. If conditions are
right, the sequence completes and the unit starts to
generate power to the grid.
DC Bus under 300
DC Bus less than 300VDC
Possible causes:
x K2 is always open
x J3 loose or making poor connection
DC Bus under 375
DC Bus between 300 and 375VDC
Possible cause:
x K2 not staying closed
x J3 loose or making poor connection
Bus OverVoltage
DC Bus greater than 500VDC
Possible cause:
x DC Bus
Short Circuit
The IPM module has detected a short circuit/over
current condition.
Possible cause:
x Short circuit in output AC line.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Over Temperature
The IPM module has detected an over temperature
condition.
Possible causes:
x External cooling fan inoperable.
x Airflow through the heat sink impeded due to
obstruction.
x Operation above rated ambient temperature for
an extended period of time.
x Auxiliary contact on output AC contactor
inoperable. Carefully check voltage at the K1N.O. aux. contact to the ground bus when the
contactor is closed.
x Defective thermostat.
x
x
IPM module not making good contact with the
heatsink.
Insufficient heatsink compound between
module and heatsink.
Gen Under Frequency
Generator output < 50rpm.
Line Under Volt Sevr
Line Voltage is less than 50% of Nominal Value.
Line Under Voltage
Line Voltage is < 88% of Nominal Value and > / =
50% on Nominal Value.
The AC grid voltage fell below the minimum
programmed limit.
The problem was caused by the utility. Clear the
fault and reset the BWT-10240.
Possible causes:
x High momentary load which forces the
inverter to current limit.
x Control power fuses F1 or F2 blown.
x AC output contactor is inoperable.
x Utility voltage fell below the allowable limit.
Line Over Volt Sevr
Line Voltage is excess of 137% of Nominal Value
Gen Over Voltage
Generator output > 330Vrms.
Line Over Voltage
Line Voltage in > 110% of Nominal Value and
</= 137% of Nominal Value.
Gen Over Frequency
Generator output > 440rpm.
Ground Fault
The earth safety ground current has exceeded the
maximum programmed value.
Possible causes:
x Grounded phase on generator. Inspect the
wiring or windings for ground faults.
x CT1 defective. Contact Xantrex Technology
Inc. for assistance or service.
Gen Fuse Fault
Check the generator input voltage at the AC input
fuses.
5-2
UL1741 Faults. These faults are in compliance
with the UL1741 Standard.
The AC grid voltage exceeded the maximum
programmed limit.
Possible causes:
x Utility voltage exceeds the allowable limit.
Clear the fault and reset the BWT-10240. If the
fault is sustained, contact Xantrex Technology
Inc. for service.
Line Under Frequency
The AC line frequency fell below the minimum
programmed limit.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Clear the fault and reset the BWT-10240. If the
fault is sustained, contact Xantrex Technology
Inc. for service.
Line Over Frequency
The AC frequency has exceeded the maximum
programmed limit.
Internal Error
Error in communication between DSP board and
Bus board.
FAULT CLEARING
Once the cause of the fault condition has been
corrected, the fault can be cleared with the reset
button. Depress and release the push button in
order to reset the inverter.
