Welcome to
GCSE Sociology!
Miss Afonso
This is a GCSE subject and NEW to all of you, so to ensure you get
the best grade possible, you will need to work hard!
Expectations:
-You follow instructions
-You respect and listen to other people
-You arrive on time to every lesson and wait outside
-You complete all class work and Homework to the best of your
ability
You will be rewarded if you adhere to these expectations! 
You will be sanctioned if you consistently ignore these! 
What is Sociology??
You have 30 seconds to think about what Sociology is
and the kinds of things we will be studying. I will ask 5 of
you for feedback!
Sociology is the study of how society is organised and
how we experience life
Some of the topics Sociologists look at…
• why we care so much about celebrities?
• the class system of modern Britain?
• Why is the number of years you can expect to live still
associated with your occupation?
• How your gender, religion, and ethnic background open or
close down opportunities in your life?
• how far the media affects how personal lifestyle choices
are viewed by wider society?

Starter: Look at the following optical
illusions. Which images can you see?
How do those optical illusions link to
Sociology?
• Need to be critical
• Look at all aspects- don’t just accept what you are
told
• Be open minded
• Society is viewed differently by people depending
on factors such as culture etc

1. How would your lives be different if you were born 100
years ago?
2. How would your lives be different if you were born into a
royal family?
3. How would your lives be different if you were born into an
LEDC?
Extension: Why do you think these factors impact our lives?
CREATE YOUR OWN SOCIETY!
Task: Group work!
You were travelling in a jumbo jet which
crashed in the middle of a deserted land.
The passengers all survived but there is no
way to get in contact with anyone.
This will now be your new home- and
together you must create your own society!
Think about:
-What do societies need? Law, education,
religion?
-Will someone be in power? How will you
decide this?
-Who makes decisions?
-Is it fair to all?
