Cell Model Project
South Carolina Standard 7. L.3A.3: Develop and use models to explain how the relevant structures within cells (including cytoplasm, cell
membrane, cell wall, nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplasts, lysosomes, and vacuoles) function to support the life of plant, animal, and bacterial cells.
Your task is to make a three dimensional model of a plant or animal cell using household items. (Sample items
may include toothpicks, clay, beads, pipe cleaners, styrofoam balls, string, felt, pompom balls, wood. etc.) Your
cell must be 3-dimensional. This means it needs to have a front, back, and sides. It cannot be a piece of paper
with things glued on it. Your plant cell must be rectangular or your animal cell must be circular.
Choose what type of cell you will build, a typical plant or animal cell. Include this label somewhere on your
model. Create a KEY or label in some way each part on your model and its function. All parts of your cell must
be labeled clearly in order to receive credit; I suggest using toothpicks and pieces of paper to make little flags.
The cell should be as accurate as possible. The cell parts should be located where they belong. For example, the
nucleus should be bigger than ribosome’s and chloroplast should be green. Include all the appropriate organelles
listed in the chart below that are correct for your type of cell. Be creative!!! (See your class notes, the internet,
or the textbook for information on organelles.)
Refer to the rubric on back for full details of what is expected.
Students will have some class time to work on their projects but are expected to do research and bring in
necessary supplies/information to complete their projects. Projects are due on Monday, January 11, 2016.
(Projects turned in by Friday, January 8th will receive 10 points in extra credit.)
***THIS HANDOUT SHOULD BE TURNED IN WITH YOUR PROJECT … EVERY STUDENT
MUST TURN IN A RUBRIC WITH FIRST AND LAST NAMES …IF NOT, 10 POINTS WILL BE
DEDUCTED!!!
