Pectoral girdle notes
2 S shaped clavicles – collarbones
2 broad flat scapulae – shoulder blades
Medial, anterior end of clavicle articulates with sternum at the manubrium
Only 2 articulations between pectoral girdle and axial skeleton – weak articulation
– allows for extreme mobility of shoulders
Clavicles –
Anterior end articulates with sternum
Posterior end articulates with scapula
Roughened surface – points of attachment of muscle
Scapula
Lateral view: cup shaped glenoid fossa(glenoid cavity) – point of articulation with
humerus – glenohumeral joint
Anterior surface: smooth and concave – “subscapula”
Posterior surface – scapular spine – deltoid muscle origin
Supraspinous fossa – above the spine of scapula
Infraspinous fossa – below spine of scapula
Both are marked by lines indicating muscle attachement
Acromion- larger posterior superior lateral process – articulates with
clavicle(acromoclavicular joint)
Coracoid process – (crow’s beak) anterior projection for muscle attachment
