ASTROLOGY
ASTROLOGY (Cited primarily Dr. Richard W. DeHaan, Satan,
Satanism, And Witchcraft)
Of the current methods of foretelling the future, the most
popular is astrology. Astrologers claim that by observing the
position of the sun, moon, fixed stars, and planets they can
predict significant events that will take place on earth. Palm
reading is another method of fortunetelling, but is so closely
related to astrology that it does not require special
consideration. The person who engages in this practice divides
the hand into seven mounds which are named after heavenly
bodies-Venus, Mercury, Apollo, (the sun), Saturn, Jupiter, Mars,
and the Moon. In addition, the palm has four lines, which are
"read" by the palmist. He calls them the heart, head, life, and
fate lines.--In discussing astrology, one must first recognize that it
is classified as a pseudoscience, and it should not be confused
with astronomy, a legitimate field of study.

ZODIAC
Astrology originated about 5000 years ago in Mesopotamia
and flourished in Assyria, Babylonia, Egypt, Persia, and Greece.
It began with people who worshipped the sun, moon, and five
known planets of that time as gods. They thought each of the
even deities owned a certain section of the heavens as his
"house." They therefore established the zodiac, the wide belt of
fixed stars that appear in the course of a year, and divided it
into twelve "houses." As a result, there were twelve dwelling
places for seven deities. The early astrologers decided that the
sun and moon needed only one "house" each, and therefore
assigned two dwelling places to Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Mars,
and Mercury. These planets had one "house" for the day and
anther for the night.
This heathen concept of the planets as gods with dwelling
places in the heavens gradually developed into a detailed system
of religion. Men carefully studied the heavenly bodies, and
noted how the positions of the planets changed. They theorized
that whenever two or more of these planets (which they
considered gods) were positioned in a direct radial line or
within a ten-degree angle, some extremely significant events
would occur upon the earth. They called this a "conjunction" of
the planets. Since the movements of the heavenly bodies is
1
perfectly predictable predictions based upon the meanings they
had given to each of the "houses" through which the planet
moved.
For many years educated men mingled their astrological
superstitions with their studies of nature, mathematics,
physics, and astronomy. Some have assume that the Magi, who came
to Jerusalem looking for the King of the Jews when Jesus was
born, came because of an astrological sign. This is a mistaken
assumption, and the idea should never be used as evidence that
the New Testament condones the practice of astrology.----A popular outgrowth of astrology is the horoscope, a chart
of the zodiacal signs and the position of the planets by which
astrologers attempt to predict future events. This is still very
popular today. The vast majority of the newspapers in the United
States carry them daily, and the preparation of these horoscopes
occupies about 10,000 ful-time and 175,000 part-time workers in
our country alone.

CONSTELLATIONS
"Astrologers have given names to the twelve constellations
which were originally termed "the course for the gods." They
believe these constellations have definite characteristics which
distinguish them from one another, and which largely determine
the personality of each individual. For example if one came into
the world between December 22 and January 19, he was born under
the sign named Capricorn, which is the Goat. His personality
would therefore bear some of the characteristics the goat is
supposed to symbolize. Birth between January 20 and February 18
places one under the sign of Aquarius, which is the Water
Bearer; between February 19 and March 20, Pisces, which is the
Fish; between March 21 and April 19, Aries, which is the Ram;
between April 20 and May 20,
Taurus, which is the Bull; between May 21 and June 21, Gemini,
which is the Twins; between June 22 and July 22, Cancer, which
is the Crab; between July 23 and August 22, Leo, which is the
Lion; between August 23 and September 22; Virgo, which is the
Virgin; between September 23 and October 23, Libra, which is the
Scales; between October 24 and November 21, Scorpio, which is
the Scorpion; and between November 22 and December 21,
Sagittarius, which is the Archer.

Astrology originated with pagans who considered the stars
to be gods, and anyone who began to dabble in this
pseudoscientific practice would inevitably be drawn into the
superstition and false beliefs inherent to the system. Therefore
God pronounced death by stoning for any Israelite who
participated in star worship
If there be found among you, within any of thy gates which the Lord thy
God giveth thee, man or woman who hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the
Lord they God, in transgressing his covenant.
And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the
sun. or moon, or any of the hosts of heaven, which I have not commanded.
And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and inquired
diligently, and, behold, it is true, and the thing certain, that such
abomination is wrought in Israel.
Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, who hath committed
that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt
stone them with stones, till they die.(Deut. 17:2-5)

Later in Israel's history, the prophet Isaiah proclaimed
judgment upon the nation, and in biting sarcasm dared the people
3
to seek deliverance through the sorcerers and the Babylonian
astrology, and indicate that God considered it a false religion
Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy
sorceries, in w h ich thou hast labored from thy youth, if so be thou shalt
be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.
Thou art wearied in the multitude of they counsels. Let now the
astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save
thee from these things that shall come upon thee (Isa. 47:12,13).
Dr. Richard DeHaan, Satan, Satanism and Witchcraft, p.86
The prophet Jeremiah also warned the people of God that
they were not to believe that omens for evil could be read in
the heavens. He declared,
Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the nations, and be not
dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the nations are dismayed at them (Jer.
10:2).
Dr. Richard DeHaan, Satan, Satanism and Witchcraft, p.87
Since astrology had its origin in the idolatrous practices of
heathenism, and could not be disassociated from superstition and
false beliefs, God has forbidden His children to become involved
in it.
A second reason for the absolute prohibition of astrology
in the Old Testament is that it is an attempt to ascertain the
will of God by other men as than those which He has appointed.
The believer who disobeys the admonitions of Scripture will be
chastened by the Lord and may be opening the door for demonic
attacks upon his personality.

I certainly would not be willing to make important
decisions on the basis of the prognostications and advice of
astrologers. Almost any intellectual person, without claiming a
psychic gift or magical source of information, could make a
series of predictions and be quite sure of being right seventyfive percent of the time.--4
In addition to being unscriptural and unreliable,
horoscopes are often devious in nature.

Remember, the Bible forbids all forms of fortunetelling.
Therefore every Christian must avoid it, gladly leaving the
future with the Lord and using the present to walk in obedience
to that which He has declared in HIs Word. Men should never turn
to the occult in an effort to break through the limitations of
knowledge God has established. Moses gave this counsel when he
said,
The secret things belong unto the LORD our God; but those things which
are revealed belong unto us and to ur children forever, that we may do all
the words of this law (Deut. 29:29).
RICHARD W. DEHAAN

When astrology becomes an alternative idolatrous religion,
an authentic Christian must stop and take notice. Investigation
reveals that from its beginning astrology had a religious
accent. The stars were seen as equivalent to gods.

It is interesting and discouraging to note that among the
most ardent astrologers are former practicing Catholics and
conservative Protestants. Some of these people have dropped out
of the “organized” church. Marc Edmund Jones, the dean of
American astrologers, was a Presbyterian minister. Some
astrologers, such as Carroll Righter and Jeane Dixon, seek to
stay in Christian circles. Kerr contends that the resurrection
of astrological belief from the graveyard of medieval
superstition is an indictment of organized religion and the
technological society.

The reason for such astrological studies by the ancients is
easily recognizable. The influences of the sun on the earth and
the moon on the seas were obvious. It was easy to believe that
those other bright deities, the planets, which were always
moving among the fixed stars, should be concerned with man’s
problems and destiny.
JOHN P. NEWPORT
DEMONS, DEMONS, DEMONS p. 95
The Zodiac is an observational construct. It was framed by
tracing the path of the sun through the stars. The stars in the
Zodiac belt do not form obvious patters, but eventually the
ancients discovered twelve such patterns. The twelve
constellations of the Zodiac came from the number of moon cycles
in the year. These twelve cycles comprise one circuit of the sun
5
around its path (a year). The patterns discovered were imagined
to be the outlines of animals of ancient legends. The word
“Zodiac” means “the parade of animals.”
The Jews were led by inspiration to reject this
astrological development. The Lord God created the stars,
planets, sun, and moon. They were not gods…
The Egyptians developed a great center for astrology at
Heliopolis, near modern Cairo. They emphasized India and China
had extensive developments in astrology.
JOHN P. NEWPORT
DEMONS, DEMONS, DEMONS p. 97
A prominent German medical doctor and hospital
superintendent recently issued a report that in many cases
astrology produced serious psychic disturbances, a fear of life,
despair, and other disorders in sensitive people. Astrology
tends to paralyze initiative and powers of judgment….
There is no evidence in the Bible that the stars, sun, and
planets are meant to e signs and guides for men. The Bible
clearly rejects pantheism (the idea that God and nature are
one). Astrology so endangers the biblical faith that the Hebrews
were instructed to take drastic measures and t rid themselves of
any who worshipped the sin or moon or stars (Deut. 17:2-5).
