Japanese Knotweed: Japanese Knotweed: Background: Japanese Knotweed are woody perennial plants that can reach 9 feet tall in height. They grow in large colonies and have hollow bamboo like stems. The stems die back each year but reappear around April and can grow around 3 or 4 inches at their peak. Leaves are 4-6 inches in length and width and the flowers are small greenish white, and appear late summer. Spread: Japanese Knotweed came from Japan and was introduced to the US as an ornamental. The species inhabits creeks, rivers, wetlands, and railroads. Dense stands of knotweed lead to little diversity and other plants. In Pennsylvania, Japanese Knotweed was once planted at many strip mine remediation sites. How to stop the Spread: The best way to control Japanese Knotweed is with an herbicide treatment during the flowering stage. Two biological controls have proven effective in preventing the spread as well. After Knotweed has been removed from an area it is important to plant another native species so that it does not return.
