Math 101 – Writing exercises – Chapter 1
86/ pg.12/ section 1.1
What does it mean when we say that a formula models real-world
phenomena?
A formula models real-world phenomena when it describes the relationship
between the variables of a real life situation.
164/ pg. 27/ section 1.2
What does it mean to simplify an algebraic expression?
To simplify an algebraic expression it means to perform all indicated operations;
remove all grouping symbols and combine like terms.
70/ pg. 38/ section 1.3
Cost of production in terms of the number of units produced
71/ pg. 38/ section 1.3
The height of a ball thrown into the air from ground level
72/ pg. 50/ section 1.4
What does it mean to solve an equation?
When we are told to solve an equation is the same as being told to find all values
of the variable that produce a true statement when substituted back into the
equation.
For example:
 In the equation 3x = 6, the solution is x = 2, because 3*2 = 6 (conditional
equation)
 The equation x + 1 = x + 2 has no solution because there is no number that
produces the same answer when you add 1 and when you add 2
(contradiction)
 The equation 2(x + 1) = 2x + 2 has all real numbers as solutions (identity)
77/ pg. 50/ section 1.4
Explain how to clear an equation of fractions
To clear an equation of fractions we first remove all grouping symbols and then we
multiply each term on both sides of the equation by the least common
denominator.
