6th Grade Treble Clef Study Guide
Music pitches are named after the first seven letters of the alphabet. The music alphabet repeats over
and over again. A B C D E F G A B C D E F G A B C, etc. Musical notes are drawn on a music staff
that has 5 lines and 4 spaces. Notes are drawn on lines or in spaces.
This symbol is called a Treble Clef or a G clef. Treble means high pitch. Instruments/voices that are
higher pitched use the Treble Clef. It is also called the G clef because the curl ends on the second
line which is where G is notated.
● The notes on the staff move in alphabetical order by line and space, so you can figure out all
the other notes by going forwards or backwards in the alphabet. (see picture below)
To help you remember the notes more quickly, you can remember these tricks.
● The space notes (from the bottom up) spell the word FACE and it rhymes with space. So, if
the note is in the second space, it would be A since A is the second letter of the word FACE.
● The line notes, E G B D F, don’t make a word. However, you can remember them by
memorizing this sentence: Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge
So, if the note is on the fourth line, it must be a D since the word Deserves is the 4th word of the
sentence and it begins with a D.
REMEMBER: Count the bottom line and space as #1
You will see that notes are also drawn above and below the staff. Little lines, called ledger lines, are
added to extend the staff when necessary.
