PURPOSE AND OVERVIEW (max. 5 sentences)
Purpose of this course is acquiring an elementary knowledge from probability theory which can be applied in solving the
biological problems, as well as knowledge in statistics which can be used in data processing.
SYLLABUS (brief outline and summary of topics, max. 10 sentences)
Probability: Random events, Classical definition of probability, Conditional probability, Independence, Theorem of total
probability and Bayes’ theorem and their application into biology and genetics.
Bernoulli scheme and approximation. The Moivre–Laplace theorem.
Random variables: discrete and absolutely continuous random variables, expectation, variance, correlation coefficient,
Central limit theorem and Law of large numbers.
Population, Sample, Data classification and graphical representation, Empirical distribution function.
Point estimates and confidence intervals for the usual population parameters, including: population mean and variance.
Hypothesis tests for the usual population parameters, including: population mean, the difference in two population
means, population variance, population proportion, correlation.
Linear regression.
