Ye Ethiopia cancer Association (YECA)
The 2014 October Breast cancer Awareness month Marked
It was on Sunday, October 26, 2014 our association and other two cancer
charity organizations jointly marked the international Annual Breast cancer
awareness month. The preparations for the event had been going on for
several weeks. Preparations ranging from application for permit to hold the
public mass awareness rally to invitation of the guest of honor .
The guest of honor the first lady of the Federal Democratic Republic of
Ethiopia, (FDRE), Her excellence W/o Roman Tesfaye arrived at the venue at
9:00 A.M together with the minister of Science and Technology of the EDRE,
Her Excellency W/o Demittu Hambissa and officials from ministry of Health of
the EDRE.
The program started with the introduction of the detailed, activities line up of
the program by the organizing committee chairperson. Next in line was an
opening speech by EDRE First Lady, Her Excellency W/ro Roman Tesfaye in her
capacity as chairperson of the National cancer Committee. In her speech,
Her Excellency pointed out the new development regarding the new RT units
that are to be incorporated in the regional university hospitals and also the
future general direction of engagement in the fight against Cancer. After the
keynote address, Her Excellency gave the signal to start the walk–program.
Prior to the opening speech by the First Lady, however, speeches have been
delivered by the FDRE ministry of Health representative and Her Excellency
the minister of Science and Technology W/ro Demittu Hambessa .
The whole message of the speeches focused on the significance of the
event, appealing to the public what it means to take part in such programs
and the importance of the practical breast cancer pre diagnosis and self
inactive approach.

The speech by government dignitaries was followed by the 2.58 km walkprogram; a route which wound its way around. The Tikur Anbessa Hospital via
the road between the federal ministry of Health and “Goma Kuteba” factory.
At the end of the walk the participants were supposed to go into the
National. Theatre Hall for the remaining parts of the day’s program.
The
theatre
hall
program
was
designed
to
deal
with
awareness
enhancement. The components of the program, included.

Breast cancer lesson by cancer specialist

A 15 minute long theatrical performance on the subject of cancer by
AFLA theatre troupe.

Speech by way of sharing experience of two cancer diagnosed
individuals who are on treatment

A three minute act and poetry reading by two young children whose
mother died of cancer.
The hall was full to its capacity accommodating over eight hundred men and
women. The participates of the walk program, however, exceeded one
thousand.
The committee of the coalition of the three charity organizations that are
working on cancer was satisfied by the turnout of the public and the
attendance of FDRE first Lady and other government officials.
The three charity organizations working on cancer are:
1. Ye Ethiopia Cancer Association
2. Mathewos –wondu ye Ethiopia Cancer society
3. Cancer Care Ethiopia
