PEDIATRIC INFECTIOUS DISEASES
About the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Department of Pediatrics:
The Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (PID) at Bellevue Hospital Center, an affiliate of NYU
Langone Medical Center, offers one of the largest programs in New York City for mothers and children
with HIV infection. Initiated in 1982, this program furthers the understanding of the transmission of HIV
from mothers to children and contributes to their improved care and longevity. The Division was one of
the first NIH-funded Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Group sites and has cared for almost 500 HIV-infected
children. Additionally, PID treats patients with other infectious diseases such as herpes viruses, respiratory
viruses, hepatitis, bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections (tropical and local). We are also experienced in
travel medicine and congenital infectious diseases.
We specialize in the following areas:
Adolescent HIV Clinic
The Bellevue Adolescent Clinic provides free, confidential HIV testing, pre- and post-test counseling,
complete medical evaluations, comprehensive medical care and, if requested, referrals to clinical trials
for HIV-positive teenagers. NYU Langone Medical Center was designated a Reaching for Excellence in
Adolescent Care and Health (REACH) site, an NIH/HRSA-funded project. The clinic’s primary objective
is to increase the understanding of the natural history of HIV in teens and disease management.
Infectious Diseases Clinic
The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Clinic is one of the major providers of care for women and children at
risk for HIV infection and other infectious diseases. Medical services are provided for children by the PID
Clinic attending physicians, postdoctoral fellows and a pediatrician, with a dermatologist and pedodontist
available. The clinic screens mothers for risk factors and provides counseling, testing and follow-up care
for those receiving prenatal care.
Pediatrics Infectious Disease
Children requiring intravenous infusions during the course of their illness are cared for at the Pediatric
Infectious Disease Day Hospital. The hospital also provides the medical, nursing, psychological and social
support services these children require. Pediatrics patients can also use the hospital for non-acute care
outside of regular clinic hours.
TB Clinic
The TB Clinic evaluates approximately 200 new cases of latent and active tuberculosis a year and is a
referral center for TB in the city. The Clinic is staffed by residents, a pediatric nurse practitioner, two PID
attending physicians with particular expertise and experience with tuberculosis.
Viral Hepatitis Clinic
The Viral Hepatitis Clinic meets twice a week in Bellevue Hospital and follows approximately 250 children
with chronic hepatitis C infection. The Clinic is a referral center for viral hepatitis infections in children
and is the principal referral center for the NYC Pediatric Viral Hepatitis Network, a consortium of health
facilities that is funded by the NY City Council.
