Atoms:
*Matter is made up of atoms.
*Atoms are composed of electrons, protons, and
neutrons which
also are composed of nucleons and quarks.
*There are @120 known elements in the Periodic
Table.
*The protons and neutrons are always in the center of
the atom
in the nucleus. These make up MOST of the atomic
mass. The electrons are outside the nucleus on shells,
orbitals or clouds. They are important for bonding.
*Protons have positive charges, electrons have
negative
charges, and neutrons have no charges. Atoms are
electricstatic.
* An ion is an atom that has lost or gained electrons.
*Number of protons equals number of electrons.
* There are extra neutrons in some atoms making it
"heavy" and called isotopes. Some of these are
radioactive <give off radiation>.
