Networking Times March/April 2010 Choose Your Words Well! By Hilde Rismyhr Sæle ! It was 6.30 a.m., Thursday, two weeks before my eighth birthday. I awoke to my mum’s voice as she was calling the hospital. Thirty minutes earlier, my father had woken up with severe pain. Part of his left side was starting to get numb. My mum is a nurse and my father a doctor, and when she measured his blood pressure, it was deadly high. ! On several occasions during my childhood, I remember seeing my father reading a book about hypnosis, entitled My Voice Will Go with You. The reason I remember this title so well is because of the words my father spoke to me that morning. I was frightened. I understood my father was really ill and there was a heavy atmosphere in the whole house; we were all wondering whether my father would make it. ! Before going to the hospital, I remember crying and going into my parents’ bedroom, jumping into their bed and putting my head on my father’s shoulder. He put his arm around me and started rocking me like a baby. While we were both crying, he said, “Hilde, I love you so much. I am so proud of you. And if you ever, ever, need to hear these words and I’m not around, my voice will go with you” ! Words can be powerful and can become a part of your life. We experience this as kids through the recognition we receive from parents, family or teachers. ! My husband remembers crying his heart out as a little child at the kitchen table after failing a test. He asked, “What can I become?” His parents told him, “You can become everything you ever dream of becoming.” These words have become a mantra in his life. On the other hand, negative words can contribute to ruining one’s potential. Choose your words with care, because your team may rise or fall by the words you speak. ! The Bible also talks about words: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” I share the belief that words can be creators. ! The power of your tongue will direct both yourself and your team. Write down the words you speak to yourself, your family and the people in your business. Choose wisely which voices you want to carry with you, and which voices to ignore and leave behind. ! I’m happy to say that everything turned out fine with my father, and both my parents still bless me with their words. Repeat words of encouragement and faith throughout your life and remember: the power of your tongue will determine your destiny.! ! !
