Two or more different rhythms are played at the
same time.
A cross-rhythm occurs when two different
rhythms are played together at the same
time. Usually the rhythms are contrasting.

The performer speeds up or slows down in
response to the music. These changes are not
marked on the score.
A ‘three against two’ metric feel. A piece in
3/4 time has notes arranged so it feels like it
is in 2/4 time.

Syncopation Drum fill
Syncopation occurs when there is an accent on a
weak beat or a rest on a strong beat.
Fills the gaps between sections in popular
music. It is usually short and doesn’t
interrupt the flow of the music.

In simple time the bars are divided up into
crotchet beats. E.g. 2/4, 4/4, 3/4
