The pursuit of the exotic by the eccentric? ANTHROPOLOGY • Often conjures up EXOTIC VISIONS – Distant people, places, customs • That’s only part of what cultural anthropology is about. It’s about – Examining humanity from every angle and looking at how all aspects interrelate - HOLISTIC APPROACH – The common denominators of the human experience, as well as the differences • One person’s exotica, is another’s humdrum (trash vs. treasure) ANTHROPOLOGY IS • The study of humanity – All people, in all times, all places • From our evolutionary origins millions of years ago (5 - 7 m.y.a.) • To today’s worldwide diversity of peoples and cultures.
